Air pollution in China continues to kill over 1 million people a year

According to the official data, every year, Chinese smog kills 1.6 million citizens. Despite the significant progress in anti-smog programs, million more people may feel the damage to their health in the nearest future.

American research agency HEI (Health Effects Institute) analyzed data of death cases in China since the 1990 year.

While Chinese officials managed to cut harmful PM2.5 particles by the 6.5 percent in 338 local cities in 2017, aging of population and damage that already been made shows negative statistics.

This winter Chinese government took active measures to stop air pollution or at least to cut it. They significantly reduce the level of smog in the air.

However, death statistics still rises, while the population is getting old and air quality does not meet China’s own standards.

According to the head of HEI, Dan Greenbaum, air pollution in China causes strokes, cancer of lungs, heart attacks. And elder people are in the main target group.

Greenbaum believes that even with numerous improvements in the quality of air, the number of deaths up to the 2030 year will be growing.

At the end of last year, in China lived 240 million of people over 60 years old. It is more than 17.3 percent of all population.

By the 2035 year, this number will grow to 400 million, according to Chinese Association of Social Security.

Chinese government has represented a new plan for air quality improvement. It will work from 2018 to 2020 years. Greenbaum warns that this plan will be harder to reach as the pollution is also getting harder to cut.

In 2035 China plans to reach 35 micrograms of PM2.5.
