Africa splits into pieces

Experts believe that Africa is ripping into separate parts. All across Kenya and especially Rift Valley territory is suffering from cracks that appear with each new day, growing bigger and deeper.

Locals are concerned and confused with mysterious splits. Meanwhile, geologists have found a reasonable explanation for these processes. They believe that the whole African continent is breaking apart.

However, their prognosis varies from the next 9 to next 50 million years.

In March heavy rainfall exposed cracks in the ground. Rain flooded neighborhoods and collapsed walls of the local hospital. Major roads were closed.

Water created long splits in the ground, stretching on kilometers across Mai Mahiu town. And while farmers were devastated as lands were gone, flooded by the rainwater, scientists became curious about these splits.

According to the official data from the place, crack in the ground are over 15 meters deep, and over 15 meters wide, tearing apart lands of farmers from Narok County.

Scientists predict separation of the African continent in 2 smaller lands in 50 million years or so. The whole Somali tectonic plate will be separated from African or Nubian Plate. It covers Great Rift Valley from African Horn to Mozambique.

Great Rift is the place where Africa separates into plates. Somali plate slowly moves away from Nubian Plate with 2.5 cm rate, according to the geologist from Kenya David Ahede.

He says we can’t stop this process as it comes from deep inside the Earth. Doctor Lucia Perez Diaz from London University, says that the process is natural and can be expected from Earth, which is constantly changing.
