New daily injections may cut the number of migraine patients by half

In May Food and Drug Administration will decide whether new injections can be approved. Patients, who suffer from migraines, are waiting for this decision.

American Society of Headache reveals that every month 4 million people in the USA suffer from migraines. Pain can last for weeks.

The new research was represented this Tuesday at the USA Academy of Neurology.

A chronic migraine causes headaches, vomiting, nausea, sensitivity to sound and light.

The new treatment is a series of injections of synthetic antibody erenumab.  Researchers believe they can improve quality of patients’ life, by shortening the length of a headache. Injections will be made every week.

How erenumab works? This antibody blocks a neural pathway that responsible for sending a signal of pain to the brain. It is called CGRP. Erenumab blocks CGRP, so the brain does not receive signal of pain, and the body does not feel it.

Scientists believe that it is the biggest progress in research of migraine painkillers for the last 20 years. If patients with mild migraines can stop pain with ibuprofen, strong migraine pains can’t be eased with the same drug. Usually, they have to use sumatriptan and ergotamine, which have the big side effect of vertigo. Another treatment is very expensive botox, that can relax muscles and help with the pain during attacks.

Erenumab does not have these side effects. In 2017 November the first results of the research were published in The New England Journal of Medicine. It proved that small doses of remedy from 70 to 140 mg can reduce the pain without side effects after. The study was headed by professor of neurology Peter Goadsby from London Kings College, California University.

Goadsby said that it is the first drug specially designed to prevent a migraine.

For now, scientists complete Phase Three of trials with 1000 subjects complete. Erenumab can cut 3 or 4 days of pain by blocking CGRP.

Who owns it? Patent belongs to Novartis, a big drug company.

Erenumab or AMG-334 is a monoclonal antibody in the human organism, which stands against calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor or CGRPR in the prevention of a migraine.

It was developed by researchers from Amgen Inc.
