Parkinson can be caused by light injuries of the brain

According to the new research, even mild and at first unnoticed brain injuries can double risks of further Parkinson disease development.

The study was made by University of California specialists Amy L. Byers, Raquel C. Gardner, Deborah E. Barnes, and others. They published it in Neurology scientific journal.

Scientists have found a link between TBI (traumatic brain injury) like concussions and Parkinson disease.

Researchers checked diagnosis of TBI in databases of Veterans Health Administration from 2002, October to 2014 September. They matched non-TBI and TBI individuals with similar or the same age category, just to keep the study more accurate.

Half of 325 870 patients were with TBI. According to the research, 1 462 patients suffer from Parkinson. Patients with previous TBI showed increased numbers of Parkinson’s disease.

The study has also proved that light TBI among veterans has 56 percent increased Parkinson’s disease risks. Researchers adjusted the data with psychiatric, demographics and medical comorbidities.

Authors said that this study proves how important is to prevent even slightest concussions and keep the head safe from any injuries. They also wanted to turn attention to high risks of Parkinson’s disease after TBI and how to lower them down.

Scientists believe that main number of TBIs usually received by veterans during their civilian life and not on military service, it is also must concern everyone. They say that another group of potential risk is athlete and professional builders, so on.

Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease can be hidden for months or even years.
